This page was set up by Robert Sewell in February 2002 to show the descendants of the Gilbert "Strongbow" de Clare through his son Richard "Strongbow" de Clare who married Aoifa MacMurrough to their daughter Isabel de Clare who married William Marshal. It is in this line that we find the link to the ancient Kings of Ireland.

Gilbert FitzGilbert de Clare,
1st Earl of Pembroke
Gilbert FitzGilbert de Clare is sometimes referred to
as "Strongbow", but his son Richard is better remembered by this name.
Born circa 1100
Died on January 6, 1147

Located on the River Wye, Chepstow defends one of the major routes from southern England into Wales. Chepstow was held by Gilbert "Strongbow" FitzGilbert de Clare from 1138 to 1147, followed by his son Richard and then William Marshall. For more on Chepstow Castle

Gilbert FitzGilbert de Clare married Isabel (Elizabeth) de Beaumont and they had the following children:
Generation Two
Richard "Strongbow" FitzGilbert de Clare,
2nd Earl of Pembroke
Born circa 1130
Died on April 20, 1176 in Dublin, Ireland
Richard married on August 26, 1171 at Waterford, Ireland

Aoife and Richard had the following children:

Isabel de Clare, Countess
of Pembroke
Born about 1174
Died in 1220 and interred at Tintern Abbey
Isabel married in August 1189 at London, England to William
Marshal, 4th Earl of Pembroke, who was named in the Magna Charta as advisor

Isabel and William Marshal had the following children:
Generation Four
Lady Isabella Marshal
Born on October 9, 1200
Died on January 17, 1240
Isabella married on October 9, 1217 to Gilbert de Clare.
